Spyglass Media Group Orders Latinx-Focused Short Circuit Remake

Deadline is reporting that the hit family sci-fi comedy Short Circuit has been in the works for nearly a decade now and after seeing a number of directors behind the project, a new iteration is at the works at Spyglass Media Group that will give the film a Latinx focus.

Plot details on the updated version of the story are currently under wraps, but it’s been revealed the new film will be scripted by Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman, who previously worked together on the upcoming comedy Half Brothers helmed by Luke Greenfield (Let’s Be Cops) and starring Luis Gerardo Méndez (Charlie’s Angels), which is slated for a December 4 release.

The original film, directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) and written by S.S. Wilson (Tremors) and Brent Maddock (Batteries Not Included), centered on an experimental military robot that is struck by lightning and gains a human-like intelligence. Starring Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club) and Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy), the film was a box office smash and garnered a cult following in the years since its release. The new sci-fi comedy will be produced by Project X Entertainment’s Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak with Rehab Entertainment’s John W. Hyde returning as executive producer alongside Terissa Kelton, while Peter Oillataguerre and Production VP Chris Stone overseeing for Spyglass. Previous attempts at rebooting the franchise Dan Milano (Dawn of the Croods) penning the script and Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and Tim Hill (The War With Grandpa) in the director’s chairs for Dimension Films before the rights were eventually acquired by Spyglass.
