Sony Is Going Back Into The Amazon For An Reimagining Of Anaconda reports that Sony is wanting to do an reimagining of Anaconda. You know the movie that starred ICE CUBE, Jennifer Lopez, and John Voight that came out on the late 90s? The original film followed a documentary crew in the Amazon seeking to locate a long-lost tribe, but they soon come across a snake hunter (Voight) who takes over the expedition, all while a giant anaconda stalks the group and takes them out one at a time. The film went on to spawn a sequel, ANACONDAS: THE HUNT FOR THE BLOOD ORCHID, as well as several direct-to-video installments, such as ANACONDA 3: OFFSPRING, ANACONDAS: TRAIL OF BLOOD, and LAKE PLACID VS. ANACONDA.

THR also reported that Sony’s Columbia Pictures is developing a new take on the original film and have hired Evan Daugherty, known for SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, DIVERGENT, and TOMB RAIDER, with writing the script. I’m actually surprised to know that this franchise is one of the most profitable franchise in Sony’s library, so you can understand why they’re looking to bring it back. THR’s also said that the project won’t be a remake or a sequel, but rather a reimagining, with the studio “aiming to take what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and eventize it in scope and budget,” similar to Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg.

I’ll be honest back when this movie came out in the late 90s I remember all of my friends going to see this movie, and telling me how awesome it was and the special effects for the snake was awesome! I also remember going to the movies to see the first Anaconda movie and walked out of it enjoying it. As for the direct DVD sequels to follow, I never really cared enough to go and watch any more movies. But I recently went back and watched Anaconda and yes the effects don’t hold up like they did back in the late 90s and there’s a lot of cheesy dialogue in he movie itself and I still find it enjoyable for a late 90s movie. As for me wanting to see a reimagining of Anaconda doesn’t really excite me so maybe once I see and hear what they are doing with the movie I’ll be excited until then this news doesn’t excite me.
