Back in 2018 we almost saw the end for director Kevin Smith he suffered a massive heart attack. But you can’t keep a good guy down last year he returned with dropping a ton of weight for his health, turned Vegan, got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, had CLERKS accepted into the Library of Congress, and returned to the View Askew universe with JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT. It’s astonishing the difference a year can make.
Kevin hasn’t slowed down just yet he’s kicking The New Year off with a bang. He’s going to be taking the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot on the road for the second time, and his script for CLERKS III is underway. Even though MALLRATS isn’t his most popular film when it came out in 95, it became a cultclassic. The 1995 film starring Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, and a young Ben Affleck follows slacker Brodie (Lee) as he traverses the local mall looking for Coke with no ice and trying to avoid security cop LaFours. Well if you’ve always desired more Brodie adventures you are in luck. According to Smith’s latest Instagram post, a sequel to MALLRATS is back on.
As someone that grew up in the 90s and spent hours in the mall with my friends MALLRATS still holds a special place for me. I’m curious to see how he’s going to bring MALLRATS into a 2020 generation of teenagers. I know that hanging out in the mall might not be as popular in today’s generation of teens like it was in the 90s, but it gives me something to be excited about to see how Kevin is going to incorporate this generation. I’m also excited to revisit some of the old characters from the first MALLRATS movie to see how much they has grown.
